An urban forest blooms in Paris
Share
Paris inaugurated an urban forest in the courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville in June, transforming 2,500 square metres into a beautiful green space and a perfect refuge from summer heatwaves.
This project is part of the city's broader strategy to combat global warming, urban heat, and enhance biodiversity.
The redesigned space features 50 large trees and over 20,000 plants, including native species selected for their resilience to climate change. These plants have been integrated with the historic fountains on the Hôtel de Ville forecourt, preserving the architectural heritage.
Despite technical challenges, the project incorporates sustainable landscaping and optimised irrigation systems.
More than a quarter of the square is now surrounded by nature, providing Parisians and tourists with a peaceful retreat while a portion of the square remains open to host events, concerts, exhibitions, and sports gatherings.
This urban forest offers a refreshing, shaded retreat in the heart of the city, setting an example for future green spaces.
