Portland's tribute to urban connections
Share
Inspired by the iconic small-plate timber structures that define the Central Eastside, Framework is a delicate masterpiece rooted in Portland’s history.
The concrete base of the building anchors it to the industrial fabric of the Eastside, while the upper glass façade provides a transparent showcase that reveals the wooden interior. These exposed structural elements produce a distinctive design feature while using sustainable wood materials instead of old-growth timber.
This contrast between the sculptural mass and the taut skin creates a combination of tradition and innovation.
Since its completion in 2015, Framework stands out in an area known for its active rail lines, freight trucks, and creative workspaces, surrounded by historic warehouses that have been repurposed for industrial creativity.
The base of the building has been carved to create a structure that rises to support the exhibition space. Wooden facets frame the entrance and various spaces throughout the public realm.
From its structural choices to its urban presence, every detail of Framework speaks to a deeper identity, one that’s both timeless and forward-thinking.
