Pritzker Architecture Prize delayed amid Epstein controversy

The Pritzker Architecture Prize for 2026 will not be announced in March, but at a later date, the Pritzker Foundation announced in February 2026.
This historic postponement, the first in the award's 47-year history, is directly linked to the release of U.S. Department of Justice documents detailing presumed ties between Thomas J. Pritzker and the late financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The delay followed a media controversy caused by the release of over three million emails and documents, known as the "Epstein Files".
According to the media, documents revealed that Thomas Pritzker, the president of the Hyatt Foundation and son of the prize's founders, presumably maintained correspondence with Epstein long after Epstein’s 2008 conviction. He was mentioned over 1,000 times in the latest file release.

On February 16, 2026, Thomas Pritzker stepped down as Executive Chairman of Hyatt Hotels Corporation, stating he had "exercised terrible judgment" in maintaining contact with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
“I exercised terrible judgment in maintaining contact with them, and there is no excuse for failing to distance myself sooner. I condemn the actions and the harm caused by Epstein and Maxwell and I feel deep sorrow for the pain they inflicted on their victims.”
In a statement given to The New York Times, the Pritzker Prize said that it is independent from Tom Pritzker.
"The jury, composed of internationally respected professionals from a range of disciplines, has always conducted its work confidentially and free from external influence, and will continue to do so."
Traditionally, the Pritzker laureate is announced in the first week of March. Following the revelations, a spokesperson confirmed to the New York Times that the 2026 announcement would be pushed back by several weeks to an undetermined date.
