The first toilet that scans your stool

Imagine receiving a personalized health report on your phone based on your bowel movements, from the comfort of your home and without a visit to the doctor.

This is now possible, thanks to the introduction of Japan’s first home-use toilet featuring a stool scanner.

It has a built-in sensor inside the water bowl, which operates in a similar way to barcodes scanners".

How it works

When a user sits on the toilet, the sensor module located next to the warm-water cleaning nozzle inside the bowl will open and activate; it will shine a light onto a stool falling into the water, allowing the system to classify its properties into the following categories: texture, color (ocher, brown or dark brown), types of hardness (granular, banana-shaped or liquid), quantity (high, medium or low).

Collected data is automatically sent to the app, allowing users to track the frequency and condition of their bowel movements through a calendar.

The app will also send personalized recommendations to users about their diet or daily routine, based on information obtained.

Redesign the world

A survey suggests that at least 76% of peolple already pay attention to this topic but are rarely able to record it digitally.

This initiative marks a first in addressing the growing public interest in monitoring health from home—tracking natural bodily processes much like menstrual apps, which are used by over 50 million women worldwide, according to a University of Sydney study.

This may be the beginning of the development of more tools that will help people improve their quality of life in a more sustainable way. This is how we redesign the world around us.
