What are VOCs, and how do they harm your health

What are VOCs, and how do they harm your health?

Indoor air quality is a crucial factor that is often overlooked when we talk about creating a livable space.

In a freshly painted house, that characteristic “new smell” is actually the chemical signature of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), chemicals that evaporate at room temperature, found in the solvents in traditional paints and are linked to immediate effects such as headaches, dizziness, and respiratory irritation.

In the long term, constant exposure to poorly ventilated spaces has been linked to more serious problems. According to the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), some substances present in synthetic paints are identified as potential carcinogens.

Zero VOC vs. Low VOC: They are not the same

Many people concerned about their health and the environment are choosing natural, VOC-free paints.

Low-VOC: Generally contains less than 50 g/L of these compounds. It is an improvement, but it can still emit odors and gases.

Zero-VOC: Legally, this refers to products with less than 5 g/L. By 2026, leading brands will have achieved formulas that are virtually 0 g/L, allowing you to occupy the room as soon as you finish painting.

The alternative

If you are looking for the “gold standard” of health, mineral paints are the answer. Unlike plastic paints (which seal the wall like a bag), lime and graphene paints offer:

Breathability: They naturally prevent condensation and mold thanks to their alkaline pH.

Air purification: Brands such as Graphenstone use lime that absorbs CO2 during the drying process, acting like a small lung on your wall.

To ensure that what you buy is truly safe, look for these seals on the label:

Greenguard Gold: This is the most demanding certification. It guarantees that the product meets strict standards for low chemical emissions for sensitive environments such as schools or hospitals.

Choosing Zero-VOC paint is an investment in preventive medicine. By removing toxins from our walls, we are creating spaces where our immune systems can truly rest.
